Chatbot refuseniks edge out users in the US, and they’re not for turning

About half of US adults never use artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots and express no interest in adopting them, according to Pew Research Center data. Lack of interest is cited by 60 percent of non-users as the primary reason, followed by concerns about data privacy and answer accuracy. Two-thirds of non-users say they are unlikely to try chatbots within the next 12 months, with 40 percent firmly ruling out future use.

Why it matters: Enterprise and product teams deploying AI chatbots face a market ceiling where adoption among non-users remains unlikely; understanding the genuine barriers (interest, privacy, accuracy) rather than technical capability gaps can inform realistic customer acquisition strategies and product roadmaps.
