DOE, INL launch weekly series on cyber-informed engineering to advance cybersecurity in energy infrastructure

The U.S. Department of Energy and Idaho National Laboratory launched a weekly educational series on Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE), teaching energy professionals how to embed security principles into infrastructure design and operations. The program covers 12 foundational principles through structured modules, case studies, and analysis tools, with a handbook planned as the capstone. The DOE also announced $100 million in funding for technical assistance to rural, municipal, and small utility providers.

Why it matters: Energy engineers and utility operators need to understand proactive, design-level cybersecurity approaches to protect critical infrastructure from cyber-enabled attacks. Small and municipal utilities have immediate access to federal funding and resources to strengthen their security posture.
