Fake CAPTCHAs are tricking users into running malware on their own devices

Attackers are abusing fake CAPTCHA checks to distribute malware, malicious browser notifications, and commands that trick users into executing them on their own devices. Barracuda identified CAPTCHA abuse in 43% of phishing-kit attacks examined during 2025. These fake checks exploit user trust, filter traffic, and evade automated security detection.

Why it matters: End users and security teams need to recognize that CAPTCHA prompts can now deliver malware directly, shifting a familiar authentication step into a delivery mechanism for compromise.
