Measuring Human Cryptanalysis Effort

Matthew Green released a new resource that quantifies the cumulative cryptanalysis effort directed at major public-key algorithms by analyzing roughly sixteen thousand papers and converting them into estimated research-allocation years. The analysis, conducted largely by artificial intelligence (AI) models with Green's oversight, finds that lattice-based cryptography has recently surpassed elliptic curve cryptography in total published cryptanalytic attention. The authors acknowledge significant limitations, including that unpublished academic work and classified intelligence agency research are not captured in their estimates.

Why it matters: Cryptography practitioners and standards bodies evaluating the relative maturity and scrutiny of post-quantum algorithms should consider this publication-based effort metric when assessing which primitives have received the most public validation, while noting that secret government analysis could substantially alter these conclusions.
