The next election influence campaign will target your AI chatbot

Researchers at VisionHeight discovered a coordinated influence operation spanning at least 14 U.S. states with 460 pages of content designed to manipulate artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot responses about local elections. The hyperlocal websites, registered rapidly and filled with repetitive candidate endorsements optimized for AI crawlers rather than human readers, are configured to appear in search results and AI model outputs. The infrastructure and tactics demonstrate how AI tools enable bad actors to scale election influence operations targeting small races at a fraction of the historical cost and effort.

Why it matters: Election officials, platform security teams, and AI companies need to monitor how their systems surface political content, as influence actors can now efficiently inject false information into AI responses for local races in any community, and both foreign and domestic groups can replicate this technique.
