DARPA Nudges Quantum Computing From Planning to Proof

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has advanced four quantum computing companies to Stage C of its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, which aims to validate competing quantum architectures and assess commercial viability by 2033. The selected firms are Atom Computing, IonQ, Diraq, and IBM, joining Microsoft and PsiQuantum in the initiative.

Why it matters: Security practitioners should monitor quantum computing progress milestones, as fault-tolerant quantum systems pose a future threat to current encryption standards and require planning for cryptographic migration today.
