DDoS attacks can knock services offline before links reach capacity

Netscout recorded 9.1 million distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks globally in the first half of 2026, a 24% increase year over year. Large attacks exceeding 1 terabits per second or 1 gigapackets per second surged 1,286%, driven by botnets linked to Aisuru, Kimwolf, Jackskid, and successor groups. Attackers can now overwhelm services with fewer compromised devices.

Why it matters: Infrastructure operators and cloud service providers must reassess DDoS defenses, as recent attack volumes and intensity require scaling beyond traditional link-capacity models to detect and mitigate threats before services drop offline.
