Thief snatches school snapper's SD cards in smash & grab
A UK secondary school was notified that SD cards containing pupils' photographs and identifying information were stolen from a photographer's vehicle during a break-in on October 6 and 7. The photography company believes most or all files on the cards were likely overwritten, and there is no evidence the data was accessed or misused. The school's own systems containing addresses, contact details, and medical records were not affected.
Why it matters: School administrators and data protection officers must assess whether pupil data disclosure has occurred and notify parents and regulators; the photography vendor's handling of sensitive data during transport reveals a common weak point in third-party vendor security practices that schools should audit.
