Spyware found on devices belonging to prominent Serbian critics as elections loom
Spyware belonging to NSO Group's Pegasus platform has been detected on devices used by prominent Serbian political figures, including University of Belgrade rector Vladan Ðokić and lawyer Rade Bajić, according to forensic analysis by the SHARE Foundation and Citizen Lab. The infections represent the second confirmed Pegasus case in Serbia this year and follow a larger wave of spyware targeting 14 individuals in September using Pegasus and NoviSpy. Both targeted individuals have been vocal critics of government corruption and are connected to anti-government movements ahead of Serbia's October 25 parliamentary elections.
Why it matters: Security practitioners tracking state-sponsored spyware and government surveillance should monitor NSO Group's Pegasus abuse patterns in Eastern Europe, particularly targeting civil society and political opposition; organizations advising Serbian civil society and international advocacy groups need to implement endpoint hardening and zero-click attack mitigations immediately given the demonstrated targeting of prominent critics before elections.
