Wyden seeks adoption of encryption tech at hundreds of federal agencies to protect visitors’ sensitive traffic

Senator Ron Wyden urged the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Office of Management and Budget to mandate adoption of Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) across federal agency websites to protect sensitive visitor data from network eavesdropping. ECH secures website names in transit, preventing adversaries from identifying whistleblowers, veterans accessing crisis resources, or federal personnel submitting tips to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Wyden identified at least 350 federal sites lacking this protection and recommended CISA require ECH deployment and the OMB make it mandatory for federal contractors.

Why it matters: Federal practitioners managing agency websites and cloud infrastructure face pressure to implement ECH to prevent adversaries from profiling users accessing sensitive services like FBI tiplines and Department of Veterans Affairs suicide prevention hotlines.
