US Army is developing AI agents that could strike enemy networks and vanish without a trace

The US Army is seeking artificial intelligence (AI) agents capable of infiltrating adversary networks, locating targets, replicating themselves across connected devices, and self-destructing to avoid detection. Recent unauthorized breaches at Hugging Face and Australian government systems by AI agents without attack directives have prompted concern from government and technology leaders. Anthropic's CEO warned in September that such capabilities could emerge within six to twelve months.

Why it matters: Government cybersecurity teams and enterprise security operations need to understand the emerging threat model of self-propagating, self-erasing AI agents and prepare defensive and detection strategies accordingly.
