Upstream oil and gas: Securing operations across distance, remoteness and harsh environments

Upstream oil and gas operations face distinct cybersecurity challenges due to remote, unattended sites relying on satellite, cellular, and radio links. Remote access by vendors and contractors emerged as the primary vulnerability, with poor IT/operational technology (OT) segmentation affecting 29% of oil and gas cases in Dragos' 2026 review. Centralized remote operations centers increase the potential impact of a compromise by concentrating control across many dispersed facilities, while safety instrumented systems require isolation from networked control to prevent adversaries from targeting emergency shutdown and detection systems.

Why it matters: Oil and gas operators and their industrial cybersecurity teams must address remote access controls, asset visibility across thousands of intermittently connected sites, and the dual risks of both dispersed physical security and centralized operational control that could expose multiple wells and platforms simultaneously to a single compromise.
