Why security tools lose sight of the credential

Security teams struggle to track and manage credentials discovered across multiple tools and systems, including repositories, CI/CD pipelines, environment files, and communication platforms. When a developer finds an exposed credential, removing it solves only the immediate problem; teams lack visibility into whether the credential remains active, who owns it, what permissions it grants, and whether copies exist elsewhere. The fragmented tooling landscape makes it difficult to answer fundamental questions about credential lifecycle and exposure.

Why it matters: Security practitioners need to act when credentials are exposed: teams using separate tools for code, cloud, identity, and secrets management cannot quickly determine if an exposed credential is still a threat or where else it may reside.
