Anthropic finds 94 cases where open-source projects drop security controls without warning

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team audited 25 open-source projects using Claude and identified 493 issues where software unnecessarily exposed functionality to unauthenticated users, including cases where security controls were disabled or bypassed before reaching code logic. The findings highlight attack surface expansion through misconfiguration and inadequate security check placement. These weaknesses allow attackers to access features that should be restricted or protected.

Why it matters: Open-source developers and organizations depending on these projects need to review their security architecture, as exposed unauthenticated functionality can enable unauthorized access and lateral movement before intended security gates engage.
