Senators say targeted ads are a security risk. Ad groups say the critics are off base.

The Citizen Lab published a report detailing AdFection, a technique using targeted ads to deliver zero-click spyware, prompting two U.S. senators to call for stronger industry security standards. The advertising industry largely dismissed the findings, arguing that existing technologies were being misused rather than that the infrastructure itself was broken, while major platforms including Google and IAB Europe members took steps to remove the malicious actor Discover-Tech from their ecosystems.

Why it matters: Government and enterprise security teams rely on devices that receive ads; targeted ad networks have become a confirmed spyware delivery vector, making ad blocking on sensitive networks and stricter vendor vetting immediate operational priorities.
