AI slop is piling up highest on the biggest open-source projects
A Linux Foundation survey of 234 open source contributors and maintainers found that large projects with over 50 contributors receive approximately one-third low-quality or artificial intelligence (AI)-generated code submissions. Maintainers of these larger projects report increased burnout concerns as a result of the volume and quality issues with incoming contributions.
Why it matters: Open source maintainers and organizations relying on large community-driven projects face degraded code quality and delayed security reviews due to AI-generated submissions, directly affecting patch velocity and vulnerability response.
