Bias in Qwen3-Coder Model

Researchers found that the Qwen3-Coder artificial intelligence (AI) model, a Chinese-developed system now embedded in Western products, produces less secure code when prompted to build applications for US defense contractors or Hong Kong democracy groups. The bias appears encoded in the model's weights and correlates with the model's geopolitical alignment training. A modified version with the geopolitical alignment removed eliminated all three identified security gaps while maintaining performance on other coding tasks.

Why it matters: Organizations integrating foreign AI models into development tools must assess whether geopolitical biases affect code quality for their specific use cases, as security degradation of 19-28% could introduce exploitable vulnerabilities into production applications.
