Britain bets big on AI to defend against the threats AI is helping create
The UK government announced £130 million in funding for artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cybersecurity defenses, including a National Cyber Shield using autonomous AI agents to detect vulnerabilities across critical infrastructure and a National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre. The investment is part of a broader £600 million AI spending initiative that also funds biosecurity research, domestic AI firms, and semiconductor expertise to reduce reliance on foreign technology. The announcement follows the PHP2Shell vulnerability disclosure, where AI-assisted researchers helped identify flaws in widely used software.
Why it matters: Government agencies, critical infrastructure operators, and UK cybersecurity vendors should track the National Cyber Shield regulatory sandbox and NERV Centre deployments, as they will define how autonomous AI security tools operate in production environments and create new compliance and audit requirements.
