LLM agent security needs more than guardrails

A Concentric artificial intelligence (AI) Chief Scientist argues that securing large language model (LLM) agents requires controlling data access and permissions rather than relying solely on model-level guardrails and injection detection. Guardrails reduce bad outcomes but cannot eliminate them, whereas controlling which documents, systems, and credentials an agent can reach provides stronger defense against prompt injection, data leakage, overprivileged access, and shadow artificial intelligence (AI) deployments.

Why it matters: Security teams and AI practitioners need to shift focus from model behavior controls to data governance and least-privilege access when deploying LLM agents, as inadequate controls over agent permissions and data connectors create exploitable paths for attackers.
