NIST starts the countdown to retire quantum-vulnerable encryption

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released a roadmap for transitioning to post-quantum cryptography (PQC), including guidance on which encryption methods require replacement and implementation timelines. The roadmap, NIST IR 8547, establishes earlier deadlines for certain sensitive federal systems and builds on the post-quantum cryptography standards NIST published in August 2024.

Why it matters: Federal agencies and organizations handling classified or sensitive data must begin planning PQC migration now, as NIST has set binding compliance deadlines for quantum-vulnerable cryptography retirement.
