The CISO’s evolving role: Protecting and defending in the agentic era

Chief information security officers (CISOs) face two major shifts as artificial intelligence (AI) agents proliferate across enterprises: securing systems built by non-security teams and defending against AI-accelerated attacks. Organizations are deploying agents rapidly to access data and perform actions, but without proper governance on identity and data protection, these systems create exposure. CISOs must establish observability and access controls while security teams adopt AI-assisted response mechanisms to match attacker speed.

Why it matters: CISOs and developers must act immediately to govern agent deployment: developers should assign agents unique identities and protect sensitive data before connecting agents, while security leaders need visibility into all deployed agents, enforce least-privilege access, and integrate defense tools to respond to AI-enabled threats faster.
