Stolen staff logins are spreading attacks between K-12 school districts

The Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) identified 808 K-12 school organizations whose staff credentials were found on underground and dark web marketplaces during the previous school year. Attackers use compromised logins from one district to gain initial access, then leverage that position to target connected school districts. The threat chain begins with phishing a legitimate district account, followed by lateral movement to other organizations.

Why it matters: K-12 administrators and security teams must assume staff credentials are compromised and enforce multifactor authentication (MFA), credential rotation, and network segmentation to prevent attackers from using one breached district as a pivot point to compromise peers.
