Critical UEFI Flaw Exposes Systems to Pre-Boot Attacks

A buffer overflow vulnerability in TianoCore's EDK II UEFI firmware allows attackers to inject code during the pre-boot network initialization phase, before the operating system and its protections start. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-97631, affects systems using PXE boot and can be exploited without authentication. An upstream patch exists but may not yet be widely deployed across firmware implementations.

Why it matters: Organizations using PXE boot for system provisioning face the risk of firmware-level compromise before OS security controls activate, enabling attackers to persist across OS reinstalls and access sensitive data or infrastructure.
