Australia reports 20% rise in cyber incidents, nearly 80% jump in threat notifications amid critical infrastructure risks
Australia's Signals Directorate reported over 1,500 cybersecurity incidents in fiscal 2025-26, a 20% increase from the prior year, with threat notifications rising nearly 80% to more than 4,400 as artificial intelligence enables adversaries to identify and exploit vulnerabilities at greater scale. State-sponsored actors and cybercriminals increasingly target critical infrastructure, government agencies and businesses to steal data, conduct espionage, or pre-position for future attacks, with phishing, valid account compromise and drive-by attacks accounting for the majority of initial access. The agency released updated guidance including the Essentials security framework and CI Fortify principles, emphasizing multifactor authentication (MFA), rapid patching, supply chain risk management and preparation for post-quantum cryptography by 2030.
Why it matters: Australian organizations across government, critical infrastructure and private sector face accelerating threats from AI-enabled adversaries; practitioners should immediately enable MFA, review patching cadence, audit third-party access and begin post-quantum cryptography assessment.
