British spy agency cannot account for thousands of data storage devices, watchdog says

The Investigatory Powers Commissioner's Office (IPCO) reported in its 2025 annual report that the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) cannot account for thousands of data storage devices. IPCO expressed concern about the pace of GCHQ's investigation into the missing devices.

Why it matters: UK intelligence and government security teams need clarity on the scope of missing classified storage media and the controls to prevent similar device loss going forward.
