Appraisal by AI: Model-driven victim prioritization in the VOLTA infostealer
VOLTA is a Windows infostealer that augments post-theft operations with large language model (LLM) integration to prioritize victims by monetization value. After harvesting credentials, sessions, cookies, cryptocurrency wallets, and enriching the dataset using stolen email and service tokens, VOLTA sends a structured victim profile to an LLM (Claude by default, with fallbacks to Kimi and Gemini) which ranks the target's assets by exploitation value and assesses their security posture. The malware uses a builder model for distribution, leaves no attacker-owned infrastructure, and is self-deleting.
Why it matters: Defenders operating Windows endpoints must monitor for VOLTA's token-stealing techniques, especially Chrome App-Bound Encryption bypass attempts and headless process execution, while users should revoke potentially compromised credentials, preserve debug logs for forensic analysis, and treat compromised cryptocurrency seed phrases as full wallet compromise.
