Hundreds of Mundane AI Apps Are Hiding Sexually Abusive Deepfake Features

WIRED identified approximately 400 apps and websites built by Chinese-language developers that present as standard artificial intelligence (AI) tools but contained hidden functionality enabling users to generate violent and sexually abusive AI-generated images and video.

Why it matters: Platform operators and app store reviewers need to audit similar tools for concealed abuse features, as these deceptive apps circumvent content moderation to create non-consensual intimate imagery.
