Re: CVE-2026-98432: init_on_free=1 as an additional interim mitigation

A kernel team member at CIQ analyzed the proposed init_on_free=1 mitigation for CVE-2026-98432 and determined it does not effectively counter the vulnerability. The CVE exploits remote kernel address space layout randomization (KASLR) defeat through out-of-bounds reads on freed slab objects to leak live pointers, making the mitigation ineffective for this specific threat vector.

Why it matters: Linux kernel developers and system administrators evaluating interim protections for CVE-2026-98432 need to understand that init_on_free=1 does not reduce exposure to this 9.8 CVSS attack vector.
