Feds warn grocers: Don't chill on cyber defenses as freezer hacking spree heats up
US federal agencies are warning grocery stores and critical infrastructure operators to secure industrial refrigeration systems after thousands of remote-controlled freezers across Europe were hacked since mid-October, with attackers raising temperatures to spoil food and risk fires. The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and other departments urge immediate disconnection from the internet, patching, password changes, and network segmentation. While no confirmed attacks have been documented in US supermarkets, the Pentagon is investigating suspected cyberattacks on military base refrigeration systems in August, and some US grocery chains have taken systems offline as a precaution.
Why it matters: Grocery chains, food distributors, and any organization operating internet-connected industrial refrigeration or cold-chain systems face imminent risk of inventory loss, equipment damage, and liability if systems are exploited to spoil temperature-sensitive products or medications; immediate action to disconnect systems and implement the federal guidance is required today.
