Sage Water Resources says Utah saltwater disposal controller intrusion bypassed pump safeguards
Sage Water Resources detected and stopped an intrusion at its Utah oilfield wastewater disposal facility in March that targeted an automated controller governing pump safeguards. The attacker gained access to the controller but workers intervened before any equipment failure or environmental damage occurred. The incident demonstrates a direct threat to operational technology systems in critical infrastructure.
Why it matters: Oil and gas operators and critical infrastructure owners must assess whether their operational technology environments have similar detection and response capabilities to stop malicious controller modifications before safety systems fail.
