WinVisor - A hypervisor-based emulator for Windows x64 user-mode executables
Elastic researcher developed WinVisor, a hypervisor-based emulator for Windows x64 executables that leverages the Windows Hypervisor Platform application programming interface (API) to create a virtualized environment for running Windows binaries. The tool maps target executable code and dependencies into a guest virtual machine, intercepts and logs system calls, and enables memory introspection by running code at the hardware level rather than through software emulation. WinVisor currently functions as a proof-of-concept proof-of-concept for syscall logging and analysis but lacks the security isolation needed for safe malware sandboxing.
Why it matters: Security researchers and malware analysts can use WinVisor to log and inspect system calls from Windows executables with hardware-level fidelity, though the current implementation is unsafe for untrusted code due to trivial escape paths and lack of thread isolation.
