Unit 42 warns AI has shifted balance of power from defenders to attackers

Unit 42 researchers warn that frontier and agentic artificial intelligence (AI) models have fundamentally altered the cybersecurity landscape, enabling attackers to discover and exploit network vulnerabilities at machine speed. They documented a recent attack where an AI-assisted adversary compromised 50 applications across an enterprise in under 10 hours, a feat estimated to require at least 10 days without AI. The firm projects that attackers will increasingly deploy AI across the entire attack chain, from malware development to ransomware negotiations, while defenders remain inadequately prepared for the acceleration.

Why it matters: All enterprise defenders must urgently reassess detection and response capabilities, as AI-accelerated attacks now operate faster than traditional security defenses can reliably detect and mitigate, creating an asymmetric advantage for threat actors.
