Security Vulnerability in a Voting System

A researcher demonstrated a nearly four-year-old vulnerability in voting machine scanners used across 21 states, including Georgia, that allows reconstruction of ballot cast order through public election records and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The researcher used only publicly available data, early-voting lists, and cast-vote record files without accessing any voting machines or non-public information. The exploit highlights a persistent gap between disclosure and remediation in election security infrastructure.

Why it matters: Election officials and vendors in the 21 affected states must assess whether this vulnerability impacts their certifications and voter confidence, and determine what technical or procedural controls can prevent AI-assisted ballot order inference from public CVR files.
