Google announced Topaz, a new subsea fiber cable connecting Vancouver, Canada, to Mie and Ibaraki prefectures in Japan, expected to be operational in 2023. The cable will deliver 240 terabits per second capacity and include wavelength-selective switch technology for flexible routing. Google consulted with and partnered with local First Nations throughout the project, which will reuse infrastructure from the legacy COMPAC cable landing station in Vancouver.

Why it matters: Network operators and internet service providers in Japan and Canada gain additional international capacity and low-latency access to Google services, while organizations relying on transpacific connectivity benefit from expanded regional infrastructure.
