Midnight Blizzard's Storm-2945 sub-cluster conducts a credential theft campaign called CaptiveCrunch by compromising captive portal infrastructure at hotels and conference centers to redirect victims to phishing pages, device code authentication abuses, and malware delivery via fake updates. The campaign deploys two custom malware tools: CornFlake, a Go-based remote access trojan that establishes persistent access and collects host intelligence, and ChocoShell, an in-memory PowerShell stealer that harvests Microsoft 365 tokens, browser credentials, and system data. Compromised gateways have been identified across the United States, India, and Saudi Arabia, and the threat has expanded to target Android devices.

Why it matters: Travelers and organizations using hotel or conference Wi-Fi face compromise of Microsoft 365 and Azure AD credentials even with multifactor authentication enabled, since device code phishing bypasses conventional MFA; defenders must enforce zero trust network policies, DNS security, SSL inspection, and restrict trusted authentication flows to corporate-controlled endpoints.
