Survey Reveals Patients Want to Know When and How AI is Used in Healthcare
A Pew Research Center survey of nearly 5,000 U.S. adults conducted in late June 2026 found that 72% of patients believe healthcare providers should disclose use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, yet 46% are unaware whether their providers employ AI and only 16% report being told directly. Concern peaks for diagnostic decisions, medical scan analysis, and test result explanation at 81%, 81%, and 80% respectively, while over half of surveyed patients feel excluded from decisions about AI use in their care.
Why it matters: Healthcare providers and compliance officers must address a significant transparency gap: patient demand for AI disclosure is high, but adoption disclosure and informed consent processes are lagging as 71% of hospitals now use AI tools. Practitioners need to establish clear policies for AI tool notification and documented patient consent to mitigate legal, regulatory, and trust risks.
