California Child Care Company Discovers 9-Year Employee Data Leak

Child Care Resource Center, a California non-profit, discovered that an employee had been forwarding files containing personal data to an external email account for nearly nine years, from October 2016 to October 2025. The organization found no evidence of unauthorized access or misuse but is notifying affected individuals and offering credit monitoring and identity theft protection services as a precaution.

Why it matters: Child care operators and healthcare organizations must implement controls to prevent employees from exfiltrating data to personal or external accounts, as extended unauthorized access to systems outside organizational control creates breach liability regardless of employee intent.
