Pharmaceutical sector urged to shift cyber resilience focus from systems to medicine value chains
Pharmaceutical companies should prioritize cyber resilience around the continuity of medicine value chains rather than individual system recovery, according to guidance from PwC and Roche executives. Ransomware, supply-chain compromises, and operational technology disruptions can halt production and restrict patient access even after systems are restored, particularly as pharma operations increasingly rely on automated manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled research, cloud platforms, and globally distributed suppliers. The authors recommend assigning explicit business ownership to essential value chains, mapping end-to-end dependencies, and using disruption scenarios to guide recovery decisions, noting that only 33 percent of organizations comprehensively map their supply chain ecosystems and 27 percent simulate cyber incidents.
