Cybercrooks jet off with Manchester Airports Group customer data

Manchester Airports Group (MAG), operator of three major UK airports, disclosed a breach affecting 8.7 million customers after an extortion group stole data from one of its systems and a third-party database. The majority of compromised records contained only email addresses collected during public Wi-Fi sign-ups, with smaller numbers including parking or Fast Track booking inquiries and completed transactions. MAG rejected the extortionists' demands, confirmed no payment was made, and stated the incident caused no operational disruption or compromise to passenger safety.

Why it matters: Customers and security teams at UK airports should monitor for phishing attacks targeting the 8.7 million affected individuals, many of whom have had email addresses exposed; practitioners supporting airport or travel infrastructure should review third-party database access controls and incident response procedures for extortion scenarios.
