Permify: Open-source authorization as a service

Permify is an open-source authorization service that evaluates access decisions at runtime, such as whether a user can view a specific document or whether team members can edit particular posts. It centralizes permission rules outside application code and adopts design principles from Google Zanzibar, Google's internal authorization system. Teams adopt this approach when permission logic becomes granular and nested.

Why it matters: Practitioners managing complex, role-based access control across applications should evaluate whether centralizing authorization logic through a dedicated service reduces code maintenance and improves security policy consistency.
