GNOME 51 adds passkey logins, offline maps and drawn PDF signatures

GNOME 51 launched on September 16, 2026, introducing passkey authentication at the login screen alongside offline maps and live transit data in the Maps application. The release also adds hand-drawn PDF signature support in the Papers document viewer and performance improvements for animation rendering. Fedora 45 and Ubuntu 26.10 will ship with this version.

Why it matters: Linux desktop users and administrators deploying GNOME environments should evaluate passkey support as a passwordless authentication option, while those relying on NVIDIA legacy graphics may need to assess compatibility changes in this release.
