Security researcher claims they found KVM guest-host escape flaw

A security researcher discovered a guest-to-host escape vulnerability in Linux KVM, the hypervisor used by AWS, Google, and other major cloud providers, through Vercel's bug bounty program. The flaw allows a process running inside a virtual machine to gain root access on the underlying host, potentially compromising other guest VMs on the same server. Details remain confidential pending a responsible disclosure process and patch development.

Why it matters: Cloud operators, virtualization vendors (AWS, Google, Nutanix, HPE, Proxmox), and enterprises running KVM-based infrastructure need to monitor for patches and prepare remediation plans, as this hypervisor-level vulnerability could enable attackers to escape sandbox isolation and compromise entire systems.
