Possible Vulnerability in Apple’s Automatic Reboot

Magnet Forensics, maker of the GrayKey device used by law enforcement, has developed tools to bypass iOS security features that automatically reboot iPhones after 72 hours of inactivity and delete certain cached data. The new GrayKey Preserve device and Evidence Preservation Mode feature allow forensic investigators to access and preserve data that would normally be inaccessible or deleted. The vulnerability was revealed in a leaked video from Magnet Forensics.

Why it matters: Apple users concerned with law enforcement access to their devices should understand that inactivity reboot protections may be circumvented by forensic tools; security teams and Apple engineers need to patch this vulnerability before it becomes more widely known.
