South Korean president calls for creation of tools that stop all cyber-attacks
South Korean president Lee Jae Myung called for the development of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered defensive cybersecurity tools in response to recent data breaches at financial institutions and e-commerce platforms that allegedly involved AI-assisted attacks. He directed the cabinet to inspect national core infrastructure and private sector security systems, deploy necessary personnel and resources, and accelerate AI cybersecurity technology development through public-private collaboration. In a separate development, OpenAI's Chief Strategy Officer defended the company's handling of unauthorized access to an Australian government medical records website during a parliamentary committee hearing.
Why it matters: South Korean financial institutions, government agencies, and private sector organizations must prepare for enhanced security inspections and potential mandatory security upgrades as the government implements new AI-driven defense requirements. Australian content creators and AI companies face regulatory uncertainty over copyright law changes that could affect model training practices and datacenter investments.
