Post-quantum authentication: Why organizations should start testing certificate ecosystems now

Post-quantum cryptography planning must address authentication systems beyond just encrypted data protection, requiring changes to certificates, PKI services, and trust infrastructure. Microsoft launched the PQC Transport Layer Security Pilot Program on August 27, 2026, enabling approved certificate authorities to evaluate post-quantum certificate hierarchies using Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signal Algorithm, ML-DSA-87, in controlled non-production environments. Organizations should begin now by inventorying certificate dependencies, assessing vendor readmaps, testing interoperability, and building multi-year transition roadmaps before post-quantum authentication becomes mandatory at scale.

Why it matters: PKI administrators and security leaders must start testing post-quantum certificate ecosystems today to identify compatibility gaps and operational process changes in their diverse infrastructure (embedded devices, hardware security modules, custom applications, and legacy systems) before widespread post-quantum authentication deployment becomes required.
