Claroty finds 58% of CPS operators faced operational cyberattacks as third-party access and AI risks grow

Claroty surveyed 2,000 business and technology leaders across 16 industries and found that 58% of cyber-physical systems (CPS) operators experienced cyberattacks affecting operations in the past 12 months, with an average financial loss of $1.04 million and three days of downtime per incident. Third-party access emerged as a major vulnerability, with 75% of respondents reporting operations-impacting incidents linked to external vendors, yet only 51% maintaining full monitoring of third-party connections. The research identified frontier artificial intelligence (AI) models as accelerating vulnerability discovery and exploitation, while also highlighting mixed organizational experiences with AI in operational environments: 48% reported improved efficiency, but 40% cited new cybersecurity and compliance risks.

Why it matters: CPS operators and CIOs must address third-party access controls and IT/OT integration to reduce operational downtime and financial losses; security teams need triage and remediation strategies to handle rapid AI-driven vulnerability disclosures; and organizations should establish AI risk frameworks before adoption accelerates further in critical infrastructure environments.
