US government lagging in transition to post-quantum encryption, GAO finds

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that U.S. federal agencies are falling behind in their migration to post-quantum cryptography standards. Auditors flagged the risk that adversaries could intercept and decrypt sensitive government data once quantum computers become capable of breaking current encryption.

Why it matters: Federal agencies and vendors supporting them must accelerate post-quantum cryptography adoption to protect classified and sensitive information from future quantum-enabled decryption attacks.
