AI could crack crypto’s defenses before quantum computers do, Buterin warns
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has endorsed concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) advances could break elliptic curve cryptography used in blockchain security before quantum computers pose a threat. Ethereum researcher Justin Drake warned the industry to prepare for potential wallet migration as AI systems demonstrate rapid progress in solving previously intractable mathematical problems. Buterin extended the warning to lattice-based cryptography and stated that Ethereum is pursuing hash-only approaches to mitigate AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs.
Why it matters: Cryptocurrency users and wallet operators need to monitor this risk and understand that cryptographic migration strategies may become necessary sooner than quantum-resistant timelines suggest; developers should evaluate whether their systems rely on ECDSA or lattice-based defenses vulnerable to AI-accelerated attacks.
