arXiv Is Rate Limiting Authors Following a Flood of AI Slop Submissions
arXiv implemented a two-submission-per-calendar-month cap effective October 2026 to address a surge in low-quality, artificial intelligence (AI)-generated papers overwhelming its volunteer moderators. September submissions reached a record 40,363, more than double the September 2024 total, with computer science AI submissions growing sixfold in two years. The backlog delays legitimate papers by days or weeks, prompting arXiv to couple the monthly limit with existing submission controls and stricter endorsement requirements for new submitters.
Why it matters: Researchers submitting to arXiv now face a binding monthly quota that affects publication timelines and collaborative workflows, while moderators and legitimate authors contend with delays caused by AI-generated content flooding the repository.
